The Best Bike Lock on a Budget: Abus U-Mini 401 Bike Lock
The U-Mini 401 ‘D’ lock is an affordable bike lock from the German brand ABUS. Despite being a German brand the lock itself is manufactured in Taiwan, but don’t let that put you off, this is a very substantial piece of kit.
In terms of security, the ABUS U-Mini 401 has a 14mm special steel hardened shackle (16mm including the protective coating) and double deadbolt locking mechanism, meaning a thief needs to break both sides of the shackle to steal your bike.
The lock itself is coated to prevent damaging your bikes paint and weighs in at 1.06 kg making it the lightest lock here. You will probably want to equip this lock with a security cable for convenience.
The ABUS U-Mini 401 lock is supplied with 4 keys but unfortunately, there isn’t a replacement key service like with the higher end ABUS models. The lock also doesn’t come with a frame mount, but we recommend keeping your lock in your bag anyway.
TheABUS U-Mini 401 lock is a little more compact that other listed here which can be a little annoying if your locking your bike to a bulky object, but on the plus, this also makes the lock more resistant to leverage.

The Best Bike Lock on a Budget: Kryptonite Kryptolok Series 2
The Kryptolok Series 2 lock is an entry level offering from the Kryptonite brand. Kryptonite has long been renowned as the go-to brand for bike security. This lock comes with a Transit FlexFrame Bracket, a 1.3m flex cable to secure all your components and also 2 stainless steel “I” style keys for easier usage.
The Kryptolock Series 2 features a 13mm hardened steel shackle which will resist cutting and leverage attacks. For added security, the locking cylinder is also picked and drill resistant rotating dustcover protects cylinder. However, one downside is that the lock is only a single shackle, i.e. only features a locking mechanism at one side.
Kryptonite offers an anti-theft protection guarantee with the Kryptolock Series 2 lock but be warned, there could be a lot of hoops to jump through before receiving a payout if your bike is stolen. Dimensionally the inside of the lock is 230mm by 100mm wide. However, the entire lock is about 280mm long when closed and weighs in at 1.29 kg.

The Eiger Compact is a colourful bike lock from the brand Squire. This lock comes in 4 colours, yellow, red, blue and green so you can coordinate with the colour scheme of your bike or clothing.
The shackle of the Eiger Compact is 13mm hardened steel with an octagonal sleeve which makes it harder to cut for power tools. The shackle has a clearance length of 145mm and width of 83mm so it will give a good amount of clearance for locking your bike.
The body of the lock is made from armoured steel and has a Disc tumbler locking mechanism for solid security. The Eiger Compact weighs in at 1.38kg and also comes with a mounting bracket to store the lock securely on your bike whilst you’re riding.

Oxford is a leading British brand of cycling products and the Magnum is their highest security rated bike lock.
The Magnum has a double shackle locking mechanism and also an ultra strong 16 mm shackle, making it very durable. The Magnum features a high-security locking mechanism for resistance to lock picks.
The Magnum is a heavy lock, weighing in at 2kg, which might make it too chunky for some people to carry with them on their commute.
Oxford offers a replacement key service and an anti-theft guarantee for the magnum. The lock also comes with a mount for your bike, but due to the substantial weight of the lock, this can be fiddly to use and hold the lock securely.
